Indications
ESORAL MUPS 20MG Tablet is indicated for:
-
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with or without esophageal damage.

Maintenance therapy for healed erosive esophagitis.
-
Treatment and prevention of peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori or NSAIDs.
-
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions of excessive stomach acid.
Pharmacology
The active ingredient, Esomeprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor that selectively inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase in gastric parietal cells, reducing acid secretion. The MUPS (Multiple Unit Pellet System) technology ensures modified release for consistent therapeutic effects.
Dosage and Administration

GERD and Acid Reflux: 20mg once daily for 4-8 weeks, or as prescribed by a physician.

Administration: Take orally with water, preferably 1 hour before meals. Do not chew or crush the tablet; it should be swallowed whole.
Interaction
-
Reduced absorption of drugs like ketoconazole and atazanavir.

Can increase the effects of warfarin, digoxin, and clopidogrel.
-
Avoid combining with St. John’s Wort or rifampin.
Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole or any component of the formulation.

Severe liver dysfunction without appropriate dose adjustment.
Side Effects

Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, or abdominal discomfort.

Rare but serious: Vitamin B12 deficiency with prolonged use, bone fractures, or C. difficile infection.
Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: May be used if benefits outweigh risks. Consult a healthcare provider.

Lactation: Not recommended as Esomeprazole can pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings

Long-term use may increase the risk of gastric infections, such as C. difficile, and bone fractures.

Regular monitoring is advised for patients on long-term therapy, especially for vitamin B12 and magnesium levels.

Use cautiously in elderly patients or those with compromised immunity.
