Indications:
Sulidac is indicated for the treatment of pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and acute gouty arthritis.
Pharmacology:
Sulindac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins responsible for pain, fever, and inflammation.
Dosage & Administration:
The usual adult dose is 150-200 mg twice daily with food. Dosage may be adjusted based on the severity of symptoms and patient's response.
Interaction:
Concomitant use with anticoagulants, other NSAIDs, corticosteroids, or alcohol may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. It may also interact with antihypertensives and diuretics.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sulindac or other NSAIDs, active gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers, and in patients with asthma or urticaria induced by NSAIDs.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, dyspepsia, headache, dizziness, and rash. Rarely, gastrointestinal bleeding, liver dysfunction, or renal impairment may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy should be avoided, especially in the third trimester. It should also be used with caution during lactation as it may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disease, renal or hepatic impairment, and in the elderly.
