Indications
ESORAL 20MG Tablet is indicated for:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Provides relief from acid reflux and heartburn.

Peptic ulcers: Promotes healing of ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori or NSAID use.
-
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Manages excessive stomach acid production.
Pharmacology
The active ingredient, Esomeprazole, inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the stomach lining, reducing gastric acid secretion. This facilitates the healing of acid-related conditions.
Dosage and Administration

General Dose for GERD: 20mg once daily for 4-8 weeks.

For H. pylori Eradication: Used in combination therapy as prescribed.

Administration: Take orally with water, preferably 1 hour before meals. Swallow whole without crushing or chewing.
Interaction

May reduce absorption of drugs like ketoconazole and atazanavir.

Can enhance the effects of warfarin, digoxin, or clopidogrel.

Avoid co-administration with St. John’s Wort or rifampin.
Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole or any proton pump inhibitor.

Severe hepatic impairment without proper dose adjustment.
Side Effects

Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, or abdominal discomfort.

Rare but serious: Hypomagnesemia, osteoporosis-related fractures, or C. difficile infection.
Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Can be used if benefits outweigh risks.

Lactation: Not recommended as Esomeprazole may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings

Long-term use may increase the risk of gastric infections and nutrient deficiencies (e.g., B12 deficiency).

Use cautiously in patients with liver impairment or those on long-term NSAID therapy.
