Indications:
Used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid.
Pharmacology:
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that blocks the enzyme H+/K+ ATPase in stomach lining cells, reducing gastric acid secretion.
Dosage:
Typical dose is 20 mg once daily before a meal. Dosage and duration depend on condition being treated.
Administration:
Oral administration; tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed.
Interaction:
May interact with warfarin, clopidogrel, diazepam, and drugs metabolized by liver enzymes. Antacids can be used simultaneously but should be spaced apart.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Omeprazole or other PPIs
Concurrent use with rilpivirine-containing products
Side Effects:
Headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, and rare allergic reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed. Limited data on safety; consult physician. Excretion in breast milk unknown; use caution.
Precautions & Warnings:
Long-term use may increase risk of bone fractures.
Monitor magnesium levels during prolonged therapy.
Report severe diarrhea as it may indicate C. difficile infection.
