Indications:
ROXIM 200 MG is indicated for the treatment of the following bacterial infections:
Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., pharyngitis, tonsillitis)
Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Otitis media
Gonorrhea (uncomplicated)
Pharmacology:
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. It is effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Dosage:
Adults and children over 12 years: 200 mg once daily or 100 mg every 12 hours for 7–14 days depending on infection type
Gonorrhea: single dose of 400 mg
Dose adjustment may be necessary in patients with renal impairment
Administration:
Can be taken with or without food. Swallow whole with water. For better absorption, taking it after meals is recommended.
Interaction:
May interact with warfarin, increasing bleeding risk
Probenecid may increase serum levels of cefixime
May affect results of urine glucose tests and Coombs’ test
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics
Severe allergic reaction history to penicillin (cross-sensitivity)
Side Effects:
Common: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia
Rare: Allergic reactions, rash, elevated liver enzymes, blood disorders
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician. Caution advised during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use cautiously in patients with a history of GI diseases, especially colitis
Monitor renal function in prolonged therapy
Discontinue if severe hypersensitivity or allergic reaction occurs
