Indications:
Used for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric and duodenal ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome where reduced gastric acid secretion is needed.
Pharmacology:
Omeprazole inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells, decreasing gastric acid production, thus promoting ulcer healing and reducing reflux symptoms.
Dosage:
Typically, one sachet (20 mg) once daily before meals. Dose may vary based on physician's prescription.
Administration:
Dissolve the sachet content in water before oral administration. Do not swallow dry powder.
Interaction:
May interact with drugs like warfarin, clopidogrel, diazepam, and others metabolized via cytochrome P450 enzymes. Avoid simultaneous use with rilpivirine.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to Omeprazole or any PPI
Concurrent use with rilpivirine-containing products
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. Rarely allergic reactions may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly necessary. Limited safety data available. Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Prolonged use may increase risk of bone fractures and hypomagnesemia.
Monitor for severe diarrhea which may indicate Clostridium difficile infection.
Patients with liver disease should be cautious.
