Indications:
Management of severe or chronic insomnia where lower doses are ineffective
Treatment of significant sleep disturbances requiring strong sedative effect
Pharmacology:
Temazepam, a benzodiazepine, potentiates GABA neurotransmitter action in the CNS, inducing sedation, anxiolysis, muscle relaxation, and hypnosis.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: Typically prescribed 40-80 mg at bedtime, depending on clinical assessment
Use with caution, starting with lowest effective dose
Should be taken immediately before sleep
Duration limited to short-term use (7-10 days) to avoid dependence
Interaction:
Potentiates CNS depression with alcohol, opioids, and other sedatives
Possible interactions with anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and other benzodiazepines
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to temazepam or benzodiazepines
Severe respiratory insufficiency
Myasthenia gravis
Sleep apnea syndrome
Side Effects:
Excessive sedation, dizziness, confusion
Fatigue and muscle weakness
Risk of tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms with prolonged use
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended unless absolutely necessary; consult physician before use.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid activities requiring alertness such as driving
Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest period
Careful monitoring in elderly and patients with liver/kidney impairment
