Indications:
Used to treat moderate to severe infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and prostatitis caused by susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacology:
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, essential for bacterial DNA replication and cell survival, resulting in bacterial death.
Dosage:
Typically administered as 500 mg to 750 mg once daily. For most infections, 600 mg once daily for 7-14 days is common, adjusted based on infection severity and patient condition.
Administration:
Orally taken with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, sucralfate, multivitamins containing iron or zinc, NSAIDs, and warfarin which can alter drug effectiveness or increase side effects.
Contraindications:
Allergy to Levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use
Myasthenia gravis patients
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, headache, dizziness, diarrhea, and photosensitivity. Rare but serious effects include tendon rupture and severe allergic reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed; safety in pregnancy not well established. Excreted in breast milk; breastfeeding should be avoided or done cautiously.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid excessive sun exposure due to risk of photosensitivity.
Report tendon pain immediately; discontinue drug if tendonitis or rupture suspected.
Use cautiously in elderly and patients with kidney problems.
