Indications:
Used for management of seizure disorders (including absence and myoclonic seizures), panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, and certain anxiety disorders.
Pharmacology:
Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS, thereby producing anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, and sedative effects.
Dosage:
Initial dose varies but usually starts at 0.5 mg to 1 mg per day, divided doses. Dosage may be increased gradually based on response and tolerance.
Administration:
Orally, with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole.
Interaction:
May interact with CNS depressants, alcohol, other anticonvulsants, and drugs metabolized by liver enzymes, potentially increasing sedation or toxicity.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Clonazepam or benzodiazepines
Severe respiratory insufficiency
Acute narrow-angle glaucoma
Untreated open-angle glaucoma
Side Effects:
Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, coordination problems, memory impairment, and rarely paradoxical reactions like aggression.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed; risk of fetal harm exists. Clonazepam is excreted in breast milk; breastfeeding is not recommended.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent withdrawal seizures.
Caution in patients with history of substance abuse.
Monitor for signs of depression or suicidal ideation.
