Indications:
Used for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media, and certain sexually transmitted diseases caused by susceptible organisms.
Pharmacology:
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, effectively stopping bacterial growth.
Dosage:
Usually 500 mg once daily for 3 days or as directed by a physician. Dosage may vary depending on the type and severity of infection.
Administration:
Should be taken orally, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal for better absorption.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, digoxin, ergot derivatives, and warfarin.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Not recommended in patients with liver dysfunction.
Side Effects:
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness. Rarely, allergic reactions and liver enzyme elevation may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should be used in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Azithromycin is excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised while breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Caution in patients with liver or kidney disease, arrhythmia, or myasthenia gravis. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve.
