Indications:
Used for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and other infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacology:
Levofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and transcription, resulting in bacterial cell death.
Dosage:
Typically 500 mg once daily for 7–14 days depending on the severity and type of infection. Dosage should be adjusted in patients with renal impairment.
Administration:
Should be taken with plenty of water, preferably at the same time each day. Avoid taking with antacids or iron supplements close to dose time.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, iron, multivitamins, NSAIDs, warfarin, and certain antiarrhythmics. Increases risk of QT prolongation with other QT-prolonging drugs.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones. Contraindicated in patients with a history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use.
Side Effects:
Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, insomnia, tendonitis, and rarely tendon rupture or QT prolongation.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential risks to fetal cartilage and bone development.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in elderly, renal impaired, and patients with CNS disorders. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight due to photosensitivity risk.
