Edema associated with congestive heart failure or drug-induced retention
Prophylaxis and treatment of altitude sickness
Adjunctive treatment in certain types of epilepsy
Pharmacology:
Acetazolamide reduces intraocular pressure in glaucoma by decreasing aqueous humor production via carbonic anhydrase inhibition. It also increases urinary bicarbonate excretion, promoting diuresis in edema and aiding in the prevention of altitude sickness by improving oxygenation.
Dosage and Administration:
Glaucoma: 350 mg 1-3 times daily as directed by a physician.
Altitude Sickness: 350 mg twice daily starting 24-48 hours before ascent and continuing for up to 48 hours while at altitude.
