Indications:
Used for the treatment of head lice (Pediculosis capitis) and scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei) infestations in both adults and children over 2 months old.
Pharmacology:
Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that disrupts the sodium channel current in parasite nerve membranes, causing paralysis and death of lice and mites. It is poorly absorbed through the skin and works effectively topically.
Dosage:
For Lice: Apply sufficient lotion to cover damp hair and scalp, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with water.
For Scabies: Apply lotion thoroughly over the entire body from neck down, leave on for 8–12 hours, then wash off. Repeat treatment after 7 days if necessary.
Administration:
For external use only. Avoid eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Wash hands after use. Do not use on broken skin.
Interaction:
There are no significant known interactions with topical permethrin. Concurrent steroid use may mask symptoms of infestation.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to permethrin or other synthetic pyrethroids or to any ingredient of the formulation.
Side Effects:
Possible side effects include mild burning, stinging, tingling, redness, or itching at the application site. Rarely, allergic reactions may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Permethrin is generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when used appropriately. Physician consultation is advised before use.
Precautions & Warnings:
Do not apply on open wounds or severely inflamed skin.
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Prevent reinfestation by treating bedding, clothing, and close contacts.
Therapeutic Class:
Topical antiparasitic agents
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C, away from sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
