Indications:
SK-Cef 500 mg Capsule is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
Upper respiratory tract infections: pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media, tonsillitis.
Lower respiratory tract infections: bronchitis, pneumonia.
Urinary tract infections: cystitis, pyelonephritis.
Skin and soft tissue infections: cellulitis, impetigo.
Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis.
Bacterial sepsis and peritonitis.
Pharmacology:
Cephradine is a semisynthetic broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic belonging to the first-generation cephalosporins. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis.
Dosage:
Adults:
Urinary tract infections: 500 mg every 12 hours.
Respiratory tract infections: 250–500 mg every 6 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours.
Skin and soft tissue infections: 250–500 mg every 6 hours or 500 mg every 12 hours.
Maximum daily dose: 4 g.
Children:
General infections: 25–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6–12 hours.
Otitis media: 75–100 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6–12 hours.
Administration:
Take with or without food.
Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water.
Interaction:
Concurrent use with nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycosides) may increase the risk of kidney damage.
Probenecid may decrease renal clearance of Cephradine, leading to higher serum concentrations.
Contraindications:
Patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.
Side Effects:
Gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
Hypersensitivity reactions: skin rashes, urticaria, pruritus.
Rarely: eosinophilia, leukopenia, neutropenia, positive Coombs test, pseudomembranous colitis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
Cephradine is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins, due to potential cross-reactivity.
Adjust dosage in patients with impaired renal function.
