Indications
ESORAL 40MG is indicated for:
-
Severe GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease): Relieves symptoms and heals esophageal damage caused by acid.

Peptic Ulcers: Treats and prevents ulcers, especially those caused by NSAIDs or Helicobacter pylori.
-
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Controls excessive acid production in the stomach.
Pharmacology
The active ingredient, Esomeprazole, blocks the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells, significantly reducing acid secretion and aiding in the healing of acid-related conditions.
Dosage and Administration

Severe GERD or Ulcers: 40mg once daily for 4-8 weeks or as directed by a physician.

Administration: Take orally with water, at least 1 hour before meals. Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew.
Interaction
-
May reduce the absorption of drugs like ketoconazole and atazanavir.

Can increase the effects of digoxin, warfarin, or clopidogrel.

Avoid using with St. John’s Wort or rifampin.
Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole or other proton pump inhibitors.

Patients with severe hepatic dysfunction should use with caution.
Side Effects

Common: Headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or constipation.

Rare: Hypomagnesemia, bone fractures, and C. difficile-associated diarrhea.
Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Use with caution; consult a physician before use.

Lactation: Not recommended as Esomeprazole may be excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings

Prolonged use may increase the risk of nutrient deficiencies, particularly vitamin B12.

Monitor patients with long-term therapy for potential side effects such as gastric infections or fractures.

Use cautiously in elderly or immunocompromised individuals.
