Long Description:
Indications:
Treatment of hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Pharmacology:
Atorvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver and increasing LDL clearance.
Dosage:
Typical dose is 10-80 mg once daily, adjusted according to patient response and lipid levels.
Administration:
Oral use, preferably at the same time daily, with or without food.
Interaction:
May interact with cyclosporine, erythromycin, antifungals, and certain other drugs increasing risk of muscle toxicity.
Contraindications:
Active liver disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hypersensitivity to atorvastatin.
Side Effects:
Possible side effects include muscle pain, headache, nausea, liver enzyme elevation, and rarely rhabdomyolysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor liver function tests regularly. Use cautiously in patients with liver or kidney impairment.
