Indications:
Losardil 100 mg is indicated for the treatment of hypertension, diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus, and to reduce the risk of stroke in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
Pharmacology:
Losartan Potassium is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT₁ receptor, which is found in many tissues (e.g., vascular smooth muscle, adrenal gland, kidneys, and the heart). This inhibition leads to vasodilation, reduced secretion of aldosterone, and decreased blood pressure.
Dosage:
Hypertension: The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. If the response is inadequate, the dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily.
Diabetic Nephropathy: The recommended starting dose is 50 mg once daily, which may be increased to 100 mg once daily depending on blood pressure response.
Stroke Risk Reduction in Hypertensive Patients with LVH: The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily based on blood pressure response.
Administration:
Losardil 100 mg tablets should be taken orally with or without food, swallowed whole with a glass of water.
Interaction:
Potassium Supplements: Concurrent use with potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, or salt substitutes containing potassium may lead to hyperkalemia.
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): NSAIDs may reduce the antihypertensive effect of Losartan.
Other Antihypertensive Agents: Concurrent use with other antihypertensive agents may have an additive effect.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Losartan Potassium or any of the excipients in the formulation.
Pregnancy (especially during the second and third trimesters).
Severe hepatic impairment.
Concomitant use with aliskiren-containing products in patients with diabetes or renal impairment.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, and upper respiratory tract infections. Less common side effects may include hypotension, hyperkalemia, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Losartan is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, as it may cause fetal harm.
Lactation: It is not known whether Losartan is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
Therapeutic Class:
Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB)
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
