Indications:

OFLACIN 200 MG is primarily indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis caused by susceptible bacteria.

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including cystitis, pyelonephritis, and prostatitis.

  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Infections such as cellulitis, abscesses, and wound infections.

  • Eye Infections: Bacterial conjunctivitis and other ocular infections caused by susceptible organisms.

  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Such as gonorrhea.

Pharmacology:

OFLACIN contains Ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Ofloxacin works by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes that are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This prevents the bacteria from reproducing and effectively kills the bacteria.

Ofloxacin is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, making it a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is particularly useful for treating infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and eyes.

Dosage:

  • For Respiratory Tract Infections: The usual dose is 200-400 mg twice daily for 7 to 14 days, depending on the severity of the infection.

  • For Urinary Tract Infections: The typical dose is 200 mg twice daily for 7 to 10 days.

  • For Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: 200 mg twice daily for 7 to 10 days.

  • For Eye Infections: For ocular infections, the usual dose is 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 2 to 4 hours during the initial phase of infection, then reduced as symptoms improve.

Note: Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions on dosage and duration of treatment.

Administration:

  • Oral administration: Take OFLACIN 200 MG tablets with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food, but if gastrointestinal irritation occurs, it may help to take it with food.

  • Eye Drops: For ocular infections, apply the drops directly to the affected eye(s), avoiding contact with the eye or surrounding area.

Interaction:

  • Antacids or supplements containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium: These can reduce the absorption of Ofloxacin, making it less effective. Take these products at least 2 hours apart from OFLACIN.

  • Warfarin: Ofloxacin may increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Monitoring is required.

  • Other antibiotics (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins) may have a synergistic or antagonistic effect when combined with Ofloxacin.

  • Corticosteroids: The concurrent use of corticosteroids with Ofloxacin increases the risk of tendon rupture, particularly in older adults.

Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, or herbal products you are using.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to Ofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.

  • Tendon disorders: Do not use in patients with a history of tendonitis or tendon rupture related to fluoroquinolone use.

  • Pregnancy: Ofloxacin should be avoided during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, unless the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus.

  • Breastfeeding: Ofloxacin is excreted in breast milk, so it should be avoided during breastfeeding unless necessary and prescribed by a healthcare provider.

  • Children and adolescents: It is not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age due to the risk of tendon damage.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects: Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, and abdominal pain.

  • Serious side effects: Tendonitis or tendon rupture (especially in elderly patients), central nervous system effects like seizures, confusion, or hallucinations, liver toxicity, and allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling, difficulty breathing).

  • Other effects: Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight), gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, vomiting), and taste disturbances.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: OFLACIN 200 MG is classified as Category C for pregnancy, meaning it should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.

  • Lactation: Ofloxacin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. Caution is advised, and it should only be used during breastfeeding if absolutely necessary and prescribed by a healthcare provider.
