Indications:

FLOXALONE 400 MG is indicated for the treatment of the following bacterial infections:

  • Acute Bacterial Sinusitis: Infection of the sinuses causing symptoms like nasal congestion, facial pain, and fever.

  • Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis: Worsening of chronic bronchitis symptoms such as cough and sputum production.

  • Community-Acquired Pneumonia: Lung infection acquired outside of a hospital setting.

  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections: Mild to moderate skin infections.

  • Complicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections: Severe skin infections requiring more intensive treatment.

  • Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections: Infections within the abdominal cavity.

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Infection of the female reproductive organs.

Pharmacology:

Moxifloxacin is a 4th generation synthetic broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, and repair. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of DNA damage and ultimately bacterial cell death.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Acute Bacterial Sinusitis: 400 mg once daily for 7–10 days.

  • Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis: 400 mg once daily for 5–10 days.

  • Community-Acquired Pneumonia: 400 mg once daily for 7–14 days.

  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections: 400 mg once daily for 7 days.

  • Complicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections: 400 mg once daily for 7–21 days.

  • Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections: 400 mg once daily for 5–14 days.

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: 400 mg once daily for 14 days.

Interaction:

  • Antacids, Sucralfate, Multivitamins, and Multivalent Cations (e.g., Iron, Zinc): May decrease the absorption of Moxifloxacin.

  • Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): May increase the risk of convulsions.

  • Warfarin: Concurrent use may enhance the anticoagulant effect, increasing the risk of bleeding.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones.

  • Patients with a history of tendon disorders related to quinolone use.

  • Patients with uncorrected hypokalemia or QT interval prolongation.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness.

  • Less Common: Insomnia, rash, abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes.

  • Serious: Tendonitis, tendon rupture, QT interval prolongation, hypersensitivity reactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

  • Lactation: Moxifloxacin is excreted in breast milk. Use with caution during breastfeeding.
