Indications:
Respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
Urinary tract infections
Otitis media (middle ear infection)
Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
Uncomplicated gonorrhea
Pharmacology:
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Dosage:
Adults and children above 12 years: 200 mg twice daily or 400 mg once daily
Duration depends on infection type and severity (commonly 7–14 days)
Dose adjustment may be necessary for renal impairment
Administration:
Oral administration, with or without food
Swallow tablets whole with water
Maintain full course of therapy to prevent resistance
Interaction:
May interact with anticoagulants increasing bleeding risk
Concurrent use with aminoglycosides requires monitoring
May reduce effectiveness of oral contraceptives
Contraindications:
Known allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins
Severe hypersensitivity reactions to beta-lactams
Side Effects:
Common: Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, rash
Rare: Allergic reactions, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, anaphylaxis
Prolonged use may cause Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea

Excreted in breast milk; caution advised
