Indications:
FUCLAV 500 MG + 125 MG is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including:
Respiratory tract infections like pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Skin and soft tissue infections.
Otitis media (middle ear infection).
Sinus infections.
It is also effective in treating infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.
Pharmacology:
FUCLAV combines Amoxicillin, a penicillin-class antibiotic, with Clavulanic Acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor.
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death.
Clavulanic Acid protects amoxicillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes, which are produced by certain bacteria to resist antibiotics.
Dosage:
Adults: Typically, 1 tablet of FUCLAV 500 MG + 125 MG every 12 hours, or as prescribed by the doctor.
Children: Dosing depends on body weight and the severity of the infection, and it is determined by a physician.
Duration of treatment is usually between 7 to 14 days depending on the infection.
Administration:
Take the tablet orally with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
For best results, follow the prescribed schedule and do not stop the medication prematurely even if symptoms improve.
Interaction:
FUCLAV may interact with other medications, including:
Oral contraceptives (may reduce effectiveness).
Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin – may increase bleeding risk).
Methotrexate (may enhance toxicity).
Probenecid (may increase amoxicillin blood levels).
Consult your doctor about all other medications you are currently using.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or any other penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics.
History of severe liver dysfunction related to amoxicillin or clavulanic acid use.
Use cautiously in patients with kidney issues, as dose adjustments may be required.
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, headache.
Serious: Liver toxicity, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
Rare side effects include joint pain, dizziness, and swelling of the face or throat.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
FUCLAV is considered safe for use during pregnancy (Category B) when prescribed by a doctor.
It is also safe during breastfeeding, but monitoring for possible side effects in the infant is recommended.
