NOVIRAX 5 GM is primarily indicated for:
Cold Sores (Oral Herpes): To treat infections caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), commonly found around the mouth and lips.
Genital Herpes: To treat genital herpes caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV-2).
Herpes Zoster: To aid in the treatment of shingles, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, in localized areas of the skin.
Herpes Simplex Keratitis: In some cases, it may be used for herpes infections of the eye (keratitis), though this depends on specific medical advice.
NOVIRAX 5 GM contains Acyclovir, an antiviral agent that works by inhibiting the replication of the herpes simplex virus. Acyclovir is a nucleoside analogue that interferes with the viral DNA polymerase, an enzyme essential for the replication of the virus. When applied topically, it helps to prevent the spread of the virus in affected skin cells and accelerates the healing process of the lesions.
Acyclovir is most effective when used early in the course of infection, ideally when the first signs of the herpes outbreak (such as tingling or itching) are noticed.
For Cold Sores (Oral Herpes): Apply 1 gram (approximately 1 cm of ointment) to the affected area 5 times a day, starting at the first sign of a cold sore (e.g., tingling, itching) and continue for 4-5 days.
For Genital Herpes: Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected area 5 times a day for 5-10 days.
For Shingles (Herpes Zoster): Apply to the affected areas 5 times daily for 7 days.
Note: It is important to begin treatment as early as possible for the best results.
Topical use only: Apply the ointment directly to the affected area using a clean finger or a cotton swab.
Wash your hands before and after applying the ointment to avoid spreading the virus or contamination.
Avoid getting the ointment in the eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse immediately with water.
No significant systemic interactions are expected due to the topical application of Acyclovir, as it is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream.
However, caution should be exercised when used with other topical antiviral treatments or corticosteroids, as these may affect the efficacy of the treatment.
Always inform your healthcare provider about any other topical products you are using to avoid potential interactions.
Hypersensitivity to Acyclovir or any other components of the ointment.
Open skin wounds or severe burns: Acyclovir is intended for use on localized skin infections and should not be used on severely broken or burned skin unless directed by a doctor.
Common side effects: Local skin irritation, redness, or burning sensation at the application site.
Less common side effects: Rash, itching, or dry skin in the treated area.
Serious side effects: Severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling, difficulty breathing) are rare but may occur. If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately.
Pregnancy: NOVIRAX 5 GM is classified as Category C by the FDA for pregnancy. This means that there is no definitive evidence of safety during pregnancy. It should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Consult your doctor before using during pregnancy.
Lactation: Acyclovir is excreted in breast milk in small amounts, and it is generally considered safe for use while breastfeeding. However, consult your healthcare provider before using NOVIRAX if you are breastfeeding.
