Indications:
Used in the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and prevention of myocardial infarction. Also prescribed for certain arrhythmias and heart failure management.
Pharmacology:
Metoprolol selectively blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors, decreasing heart rate and myocardial contractility, which reduces cardiac output and blood pressure.
Dosage:
Typical dose is 25 mg to 100 mg daily, divided into one or two doses, depending on clinical response.
Administration:
Taken orally with or after meals to improve tolerance.
Interaction:
May interact with calcium channel blockers, digoxin, antiarrhythmic drugs, and insulin; dosage adjustment and monitoring may be necessary.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in severe bradycardia, heart block above first degree, cardiogenic shock, and hypersensitivity to metoprolol.
Side Effects:
Possible side effects include fatigue, dizziness, cold extremities, hypotension, and gastrointestinal discomfort.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if benefits outweigh risks. May affect fetus; breastfeeding is generally not recommended.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid abrupt discontinuation. Use cautiously in patients with asthma, diabetes, and peripheral vascular disease.
