Indications:

FLUNAC 150 MG is indicated for the treatment of the following fungal infections:

  • Vaginal Candidiasis: Infection of the vagina caused by Candida species.

  • Oropharyngeal Candidiasis: Infection of the mouth and throat caused by Candida species.

  • Esophageal Candidiasis: Infection of the esophagus caused by Candida species.

  • Skin Fungal Infections (Tinea): Infections affecting the skin.

  • Nail Fungal Infections (Onychomycosis): Infections affecting the nails.

  • Hair Fungal Infections (Kerion): Infections affecting the hair.

  • Cryptococcal Meningitis: Infection of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

  • Systemic Fungal Infections: Infections affecting internal organs.

Pharmacology:

Fluconazole is an antifungal agent that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This inhibition disrupts the cell membrane, leading to increased permeability and ultimately fungal cell death.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Vaginal Candidiasis: 150 mg as a single dose.

  • Oropharyngeal Candidiasis: 200 mg on the first day, then 100 mg daily for 14 days.

  • Esophageal Candidiasis: 200 mg on the first day, then 100 mg daily for 14–30 days.

  • Skin Fungal Infections: 150 mg weekly for 4–6 weeks.

  • Onychomycosis: 150 mg weekly for 12 months.

  • Cryptococcal Meningitis: 400 mg on the first day, then 200–400 mg daily.

  • Prevention of Fungal Infections in Immunocompromised Patients: 50–400 mg daily.

Interaction:

  • Warfarin: Fluconazole may increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, leading to an increased risk of bleeding.

  • Oral Sulfonylureas: Fluconazole may increase the plasma concentrations of oral sulfonylureas, leading to an increased risk of hypoglycemia.

  • Hydrochlorothiazide: Co-administration may increase plasma concentrations of fluconazole by 40%.

  • Phenytoin: Co-administration may increase the plasma concentration of phenytoin.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to fluconazole or other azole antifungals.

  • Concurrent use with cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, or terfenadine.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Nausea, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea.

  • Less Common: Skin rash, dizziness, elevated liver enzymes.

  • Serious: Hepatotoxicity, QT interval prolongation, hypersensitivity reactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: Category D. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

  • Lactation: Fluconazole is excreted in breast milk. Use with caution during breastfeeding.
