Indications:
HEPANOR 140 MG is indicated for the treatment of:
Chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults with evidence of active viral replication and liver inflammation.
It is used to reduce the level of the hepatitis B virus in the blood and improve liver function by preventing the virus from replicating.
Pharmacology:
HEPANOR contains Telbivudine, a nucleoside analogue that works by inhibiting the action of the hepatitis B virus's reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing viral replication. This helps reduce the viral load, decreases liver inflammation, and lowers the risk of liver damage caused by chronic hepatitis B infection.
Dosage:
Adults: The typical dose is 140 mg once daily, taken orally with or without food.
Treatment duration may vary based on the patient’s condition and the doctor’s recommendation, but it often continues for several months or years.
It is important to take the medicine regularly at the same time each day to maintain its effectiveness.
Administration:
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Do not chew or crush the tablet.
It can be taken with or without food. However, try to take it at the same time each day to establish a routine.
Interaction:
Adefovir, lamivudine, emtricitabine, or tenofovir: Co-administration may increase the risk of side effects, particularly kidney-related issues.
Cimetidine: May increase telbivudine blood levels, possibly leading to an increased risk of side effects.
Rifampin: May decrease the effectiveness of telbivudine.
Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to telbivudine or any of the excipients in the formulation.
Severe liver impairment or liver failure.
Severe renal impairment (adjustment may be required for patients with kidney dysfunction).
Pregnancy and lactation: Telbivudine should only be used in pregnancy if the benefit outweighs the risk, and under strict medical supervision.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
Fatigue, headache, nausea, and diarrhea.
Muscle pain or weakness (myopathy).
Elevated liver enzymes (indicating liver irritation or injury).
Rashes or allergic reactions in rare cases.
Severe side effects (less common) include:
Lactic acidosis: A rare but serious condition caused by a build-up of lactic acid in the blood, which may occur in patients with liver or kidney problems.
Severe muscle pain or weakness, especially if combined with other antiviral medications.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Telbivudine is classified as Category C in pregnancy. It should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Always consult a healthcare provider before taking this medication during pregnancy.
Lactation: It is not known whether telbivudine passes into breast milk. Breastfeeding mothers should discuss the risks and benefits with their doctor.
Therapeutic Class:
Antiviral agent; Nucleoside analogue.
Storage Conditions:
Store at room temperature, below 25°C.
