Indications:
Losardil 25 mg is indicated for the treatment of hypertension and to reduce the risk of stroke in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
Pharmacology:
Losartan Potassium is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT₁ receptor, leading to vasodilation and reduced secretion of aldosterone.
Dosage:
Hypertension: The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. If the antihypertensive effect is inadequate, the dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily.
Stroke Risk Reduction in LVH: The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily based on blood pressure response.
Administration:
Take the tablet orally with or without food, swallowed whole with a glass of water.
Interaction:
Potassium Supplements: Concurrent use with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics may lead to hyperkalemia.
NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce the antihypertensive effect of Losartan.
Other Antihypertensive Agents: Concurrent use may have an additive effect.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Losartan Potassium or any of the excipients.
Pregnancy (especially during the second and third trimesters).
Severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, and upper respiratory tract infections. Less common side effects may include hypotension, hyperkalemia, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Contraindicated during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters.
Lactation: Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
