Indications:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Gastric and duodenal ulcers
Hypersecretory conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Acid indigestion and heartburn
Pediatric reflux esophagitis
Pharmacology:
Famotidine is a potent and selective histamine H2 receptor antagonist. It inhibits the final step of acid production by blocking H2 receptors on the gastric parietal cells, thus reducing both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion.
Dosage:
Adults: 10–20 ml twice daily depending on severity (as prescribed)
Children (above 1 year): Dose based on weight, typically 0.5 mg/kg twice daily
Dose adjustment required in renal impairment
Administration:
Shake well before use
Administer orally with or without food
Use a proper measuring device
Do not mix with other liquids unless directed
Interaction:
Reduces absorption of certain drugs requiring acidic pH (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole)
Minimal interaction with antacids
No major CYP450 interaction
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Famotidine or other H2 blockers
Not recommended in severe renal failure without dose adjustment
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation
Rare: Drowsiness, rash, confusion (elderly), arrhythmias
Long-term use: Risk of vitamin B12 deficiency
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Category B: Safe in pregnancy if clearly needed
Use with caution during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings:
Rule out malignancy before starting treatment for gastric ulcers
Monitor renal function in long-term users
Use cautiously in infants and elderly
Avoid prolonged unsupervised use
