Indications:
Treatment of hypertension, chronic stable angina pectoris, and heart failure.
Pharmacology:
Metoprolol succinate selectively blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors, decreasing heart rate, myocardial contractility, and blood pressure.
Dosage:
Usually started at 25–50 mg once daily; dose may be adjusted up to 100 mg or more based on clinical response.
Administration:
Oral administration once daily, preferably with or after meals for steady absorption.
Interaction:
May interact with calcium channel blockers, digoxin, insulin, antiarrhythmics, and other antihypertensive drugs; monitor patient closely.
Contraindications:
Severe bradycardia, cardiogenic shock, heart block greater than first degree, and hypersensitivity to metoprolol.
Side Effects:
Fatigue, dizziness, hypotension, bradycardia, and gastrointestinal discomfort are common side effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy; potential fetal risks exist. Not recommended during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid sudden discontinuation; caution in patients with asthma, diabetes, and peripheral vascular disease.
