NOVIRAX 400 MG is primarily indicated for:
Genital Herpes: To treat and manage outbreaks of genital herpes caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold Sores: To treat oral herpes (cold sores) caused by HSV.
Shingles (Herpes Zoster): To manage pain and accelerate healing in shingles caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
Chickenpox: Used to treat chickenpox in certain patients, particularly those with weakened immune systems.
NOVIRAX contains Acyclovir, a synthetic antiviral drug. Acyclovir works by inhibiting the viral DNA synthesis in the infected cells. It specifically targets the enzyme viral DNA polymerase, which is responsible for replicating the viral genome. By inhibiting this enzyme, Acyclovir prevents the herpes virus from multiplying and spreading, thus reducing the severity and duration of the infection.
Acyclovir is most effective when taken early in the course of an infection and is particularly useful for managing recurrent outbreaks of herpes infections.
For Genital Herpes: The usual dose is 400 mg three times a day for 7 to 10 days, depending on the severity of the infection.
For Shingles (Herpes Zoster): The typical dose is 800 mg five times a day for 7 to 10 days.
For Cold Sores (Oral Herpes): The usual dose is 400 mg three times a day for 5 days.
For Chickenpox: In immunocompromised individuals, the usual dose is 800 mg four times daily for 5 days.
Note: Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions on dosage and duration.
NOVIRAX 400 MG should be taken with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
Ensure that you drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, especially if you are also taking other medications that can affect kidney function.
Complete the entire course of treatment even if symptoms improve to avoid the recurrence of the infection.
Probenecid: May increase the blood levels of Acyclovir.
Zidovudine: Combining with Zidovudine (an antiretroviral medication) may lead to an increased risk of side effects, such as drowsiness and dizziness.
Cimetidine: May increase the concentration of Acyclovir in the bloodstream.
Other nephrotoxic drugs: Caution is advised when used with other drugs that affect the kidneys (e.g., aminoglycosides), as this may increase the risk of kidney damage.
Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, or herbal products you are using.
Hypersensitivity to Acyclovir or any of its components.
Severe renal impairment: People with significantly reduced kidney function may need a dose adjustment.
Pregnancy: Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed, especially in the first trimester.
Breastfeeding: Acyclovir is excreted in breast milk, but it is generally considered safe for use during breastfeeding. However, consult your doctor before using.
Common side effects: Nausea, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness.
Serious side effects: Renal toxicity (kidney problems), confusion, hallucinations, seizures, and blood disorders (e.g., low white blood cell count, low platelet count).
Rare but severe side effects: Severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), liver dysfunction, and skin reactions.
Pregnancy: Acyclovir should be used during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Lactation: Acyclovir passes into breast milk, but it is generally considered safe for use during breastfeeding. Consult your healthcare provider for further advice.
