Indications:
Dezco (Plain) 6mg is indicated for:
Allergic conditions (asthma, rhinitis, dermatitis)
Autoimmune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
Musculoskeletal disorders
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)
Nephrotic syndrome
Inflammatory bowel disease
Other chronic inflammatory or immune-mediated disorders
Pharmacology:
Deflazacort is a glucocorticoid that exhibits anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. It inhibits multiple inflammatory cytokines and pathways, reducing swelling, redness, and immune overactivity. It has a better safety profile for bones and glucose metabolism compared to some other steroids.
Dosage:
Adults: 6–90 mg per day depending on disease severity
Children: 0.25–1.5 mg/kg/day depending on the condition
Dosage should be individualized and adjusted based on response and medical condition. Always follow physician’s prescription.
Administration:
To be taken orally, preferably with food to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow whole with water.
Interaction:
May interact with antidiabetic drugs, anticoagulants, and NSAIDs
Reduced efficacy with rifampin, phenytoin, or barbiturates
Increased toxicity risk when used with other immunosuppressants
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Deflazacort
Systemic fungal infections
Patients receiving live vaccines
Peptic ulcer disease (use cautiously)
Side Effects:
Common: weight gain, increased appetite, mood changes, insomnia
Long-term use: osteoporosis, growth suppression in children, adrenal suppression, hyperglycemia, glaucoma, hypertension
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if benefits outweigh risks. Deflazacort crosses the placenta and may affect fetal development. Use cautiously during breastfeeding as the drug may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, and bone density during prolonged use
Taper dose gradually after long-term use to prevent adrenal insufficiency
Increased risk of infections due to immunosuppression
Avoid live vaccines during treatment
