ORNID 500 MG is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by protozoa and anaerobic bacteria, including:
Amoebiasis: A parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica, which affects the intestines and other organs.
Giardiasis: An intestinal infection caused by the protozoan Giardia lamblia.
Trichomoniasis: A sexually transmitted infection caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis.
Bacterial infections: It is also effective in treating infections caused by anaerobic bacteria in various parts of the body, including the gastrointestinal and genital tract.
ORNID 500 MG contains Ornidazole, an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent. It works by disrupting the DNA of the infectious organisms, leading to the inhibition of their replication and ultimately causing cell death. Ornidazole is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that thrive in low-oxygen environments) and protozoa.
Ornidazole is chemically related to metronidazole and works in a similar way, by interacting with the microbial DNA, but with a potentially improved side-effect profile and effectiveness in certain infections.
For Amoebiasis: The typical dose is 500 mg two to three times a day for 5–10 days, depending on the severity of the infection.
For Giardiasis: 500 mg twice a day for 5–7 days.
For Trichomoniasis: Typically, a single dose of 1 gram (1000 mg) or divided doses of 500 mg twice a day for 5–7 days.
For Anaerobic bacterial infections: The dose may vary depending on the type and severity of the infection, typically 500 mg twice a day for 7–10 days.
Note: Always follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider, as dosage may vary based on individual condition and severity.
Oral administration: Take ORNID 500 MG tablets with a glass of water.
It can be taken with or without food. However, if gastrointestinal discomfort occurs, taking it with food may help.
Do not chew or crush the tablet. Swallow it whole.
It is advisable to follow your healthcare provider’s dosage schedule for the best results.
Alcohol: Ornidazole may interact with alcohol and cause a disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, headache, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps). Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after completing the medication.
Anticoagulants: Concurrent use of Ornidazole with warfarin or other anticoagulants may increase the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of prothrombin time is recommended.
Cimetidine: Cimetidine, a drug used for acid reflux, can interfere with the metabolism of Ornidazole, potentially increasing its levels in the blood.
Other medications: Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medications, especially those affecting the liver or kidneys.
Hypersensitivity: Do not use ORNID 500 MG if you have a known allergy to Ornidazole or any of its components.
Pregnancy: ORNID 500 MG should be used with caution during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Consult your healthcare provider for alternatives if you are pregnant.
Breastfeeding: Ornidazole can pass into breast milk, so it should be avoided during breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary.
Severe liver impairment: If you have severe liver disease, Ornidazole should be used with caution or avoided.
Common side effects: Nausea, headache, dizziness, dry mouth, metallic taste, and gastrointestinal upset (such as abdominal pain or diarrhea).
Serious side effects: Seizures, confusion, peripheral neuropathy (tingling, numbness in hands and feet), and liver toxicity (rare).
Other effects: Allergic reactions, including rash, itching, and swelling.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop using the medication and seek immediate medical attention:
Severe allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, or throat.
Signs of liver problems: Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual fatigue.
Neurological symptoms: Seizures, confusion, or difficulty walking.
Pregnancy: ORNID 500 MG should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the risk. It is classified as Category C (animal studies show adverse effects on the fetus, but there are no adequate human studies). Always consult your doctor before taking it during pregnancy.
Lactation: Ornidazole is excreted in breast milk. It should be avoided during breastfeeding unless advised by your healthcare provider.
Antiprotozoal and Antibacterial Agent; Nitroimidazole class.
Store ORNID 500 MG at room temperature (15°C to 30°C).
Keep the tablets in a dry, cool place, away from moisture and light.
Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Do not use the medication after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
