OFLACIN 400 MG is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:
Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis caused by susceptible bacteria.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including cystitis, pyelonephritis, and prostatitis.
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Such as cellulitis, abscesses, and wound infections.
Eye Infections: Bacterial conjunctivitis and other ocular infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Like gonorrhea.
OFLACIN 400 MG contains Ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Ofloxacin works by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes that are necessary for bacterial DNA replication and transcription. By inhibiting these enzymes, Ofloxacin prevents bacteria from replicating, thus halting their growth and ultimately killing them.
Ofloxacin is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, which makes it a broad-spectrum antibiotic. This allows it to be used in the treatment of various infections in different body systems, including the respiratory, urinary, skin, and ocular systems.
For Respiratory Tract Infections: The usual dose is 400 mg once or twice a day for 7 to 14 days, depending on the severity of the infection.
For Urinary Tract Infections: The typical dose is 400 mg once or twice a day for 7 to 10 days.
For Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: 400 mg once or twice a day for 7 to 10 days.
For Eye Infections: The typical dose is 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 2 to 4 hours initially, then reducing as symptoms improve.
Note: Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding dosage and treatment duration.
Oral Use: Take OFLACIN 400 MG tablets with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.
Eye Drops: For ocular infections, apply 1-2 drops directly to the affected eye(s) as directed by your healthcare provider.
Antacids and Supplements: Avoid taking antacids, calcium, magnesium, or iron supplements within 2 hours of taking Ofloxacin, as they can reduce the absorption of the drug.
Warfarin: Ofloxacin may increase the effects of warfarin, raising the risk of bleeding. Monitoring of coagulation parameters is recommended.
Other Antibiotics: Caution should be used when combining Ofloxacin with other antibiotics, especially penicillins and cephalosporins, as it may affect treatment efficacy.
Corticosteroids: Concurrent use of corticosteroids with Ofloxacin may increase the risk of tendonitis or tendon rupture.
Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are using, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal products.
Hypersensitivity to Ofloxacin or any other fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
Tendon disorders: History of tendonitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolones.
Pregnancy: Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, unless the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus.
Breastfeeding: Ofloxacin is excreted in breast milk and should be used with caution during breastfeeding.
Children and adolescents: Ofloxacin is not recommended for children under 18 years old due to the risk of tendon damage.
Common side effects: Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, and abdominal discomfort.
Serious side effects: Tendon rupture or tendonitis (especially in older adults), central nervous system side effects such as seizures, confusion, hallucinations, and severe gastrointestinal disturbances.
Other potential effects: Photosensitivity (increased risk of sunburn), liver dysfunction, and skin rash. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling, difficulty breathing) may occur.
Pregnancy: Classified as Category C by the FDA. OFLACIN 400 MG should only be used in pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the risk to the fetus. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Lactation: Ofloxacin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. Use caution when taking this medication while breastfeeding, and consult your healthcare provider for guidance.
