Indications:
Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
Chronic urticaria (hives)
Other allergic skin conditions causing itching and swelling
Pharmacology:
Cetirizine is a selective, long-acting antihistamine that blocks peripheral H1 receptors, preventing histamine-mediated allergic symptoms such as itching, swelling, and redness.
Dosage:
Adults and children over 6 years: 10 mg once daily. Dose can be adjusted as needed but should not exceed 10 mg/day.
Administration:
Oral administration, with or without food. Swallow tablet whole with water.
Interaction:
May interact with CNS depressants (alcohol, sedatives), and other antihistamines. Use caution with drugs causing sedation.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to cetirizine or hydroxyzine
Severe renal impairment (dose adjustment required)
Side Effects:
Common: Drowsiness, dry mouth, headache
Less common: Fatigue, dizziness, gastrointestinal discomfort
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed. Cetirizine passes into breast milk; use with caution during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use cautiously in patients with kidney impairment. Avoid alcohol or sedatives that increase drowsiness.
