Pharmacology:
Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, leading to increased serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft. This enhancement of serotonergic activity helps improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders.
Dosage:

Adults:

MDD & OCD: Start with 50 mg daily; may increase to 200 mg daily.

PD, PTSD, SAD: Start with 25 mg daily; increase to 50 mg after one week; may further increase to 200 mg daily.

PMDD: Start with 50 mg daily; may increase to 150 mg daily.

Children (6-12 years):

OCD: Start with 25 mg daily; may increase to 200 mg daily.

Administration:

Oral administration with or without food.
-
Take the tablet whole with a glass of water.
-
Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.
Interaction:
-
Drug Interactions: May interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), anticoagulants like warfarin, other SSRIs, and certain antifungals and antibiotics. Monitor prothrombin time when co-administered with warfarin.

Food Interactions: Avoid alcohol as it may increase side effects like drowsiness and dizziness.

Disease Interactions: Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment, seizures, or bleeding disorders.
Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to sertraline or any component of the formulation.

Concurrent use with MAOIs or within 14 days of discontinuing an MAOI.
Side Effects:

Common: Nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, sexual dysfunction.

Less common: Tremors, sweating, weight changes, headache, fatigue.
Pregnancy & Lactation:

Pregnancy: Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Lactation: Excreted in breast milk; use with caution.
