ORAMET 500 MG is indicated for:
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: It is used to help lower high blood glucose levels in adults with Type 2 diabetes, in combination with diet and exercise.
Adjunct therapy: ORAMET is often used with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin when diet and exercise alone are insufficient for controlling blood sugar.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): In some cases, Metformin is used off-label to treat PCOS, especially to address insulin resistance and associated symptoms.
ORAMET contains Metformin Hydrochloride, a biguanide class oral antihyperglycemic agent. It works through three primary mechanisms:
Decreasing hepatic glucose production: Metformin reduces the production of glucose by the liver, thus lowering blood sugar levels.
Improving insulin sensitivity: It enhances the body’s response to insulin, allowing cells to absorb glucose more effectively.
Decreasing glucose absorption in the intestines: Metformin slightly reduces the absorption of glucose from the intestines, further contributing to its blood sugar-lowering effect.
Metformin does not cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when used alone, and it is not associated with weight gain, making it a commonly prescribed first-line medication for Type 2 diabetes.
Initial dose: Typically, 500 mg once or twice daily with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
Maintenance dose: The dose can be increased to 1000 mg to 2000 mg per day, depending on the patient's response. It is generally taken in divided doses, i.e., one or two tablets daily with meals.
Maximum dose: The usual maximum daily dose is 2500 mg (taken in divided doses).
Note: Always follow the prescribed dose from your doctor, and never exceed the recommended dose.
Oral administration: Take ORAMET 500 MG with food to reduce the chances of gastrointestinal discomfort (like nausea or upset stomach).
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Do not chew or crush the tablet. Always take it at the same time each day to help remember.
Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious side effect of Metformin.
Diuretics: Use with caution as diuretics may affect kidney function, which can impact Metformin clearance.
Corticosteroids and thyroid medications: These may alter blood sugar levels, affecting the effectiveness of Metformin.
Other antidiabetic agents: When combined with insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase.
Contrast agents: Contrast agents used in X-ray or CT scans can affect kidney function, so Metformin should be temporarily stopped before and after such procedures.
Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications or supplements you're using.
Renal Dysfunction: ORAMET 500 MG should be avoided in patients with severe kidney dysfunction (e.g., serum creatinine levels higher than 1.5 mg/dL for males and 1.4 mg/dL for females).
Lactic Acidosis: Contraindicated in patients with a history of lactic acidosis or those who have conditions that predispose them to it, such as severe dehydration or alcohol abuse.
Hypersensitivity: Do not use if you are allergic to Metformin or any of the ingredients in the medication.
Pregnancy: ORAMET is generally not recommended during pregnancy. Insulin is usually preferred for blood sugar control in pregnant women.
Breastfeeding: Metformin is excreted in breast milk, so it is important to consult your healthcare provider before using it during breastfeeding.
Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, bloating, and diarrhea, especially when starting the medication.
Serious side effects: Lactic acidosis (rare but very serious), vitamin B12 deficiency (with long-term use), and severe hypoglycemia (when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas).
Less common side effects: Weight loss, metallic taste, or skin rash.
If you experience any of the following serious symptoms, seek medical help immediately:
Signs of lactic acidosis: Unexplained muscle pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and feeling weak or extremely tired.
Signs of hypoglycemia: Excessive sweating, dizziness, confusion, or blurred vision.
Pregnancy: ORAMET 500 MG is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. Insulin is often preferred for controlling blood sugar during pregnancy.
Lactation: It is not known if Metformin passes into breast milk in significant amounts. It should be used with caution while breastfeeding, and a healthcare provider should be consulted.
