ORAMET 850 MG is primarily used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is indicated for:
Blood sugar control: To lower high blood glucose levels in individuals with Type 2 diabetes.
Combination therapy: Often used in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control blood glucose levels.
ORAMET contains Metformin Hydrochloride, which is an oral antihyperglycemic agent. Metformin works through several mechanisms:
Reduction in hepatic glucose production: Metformin reduces glucose production by the liver, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
Improvement in insulin sensitivity: It enhances the body’s response to insulin, allowing for better utilization of glucose by cells.
Decreased intestinal absorption of glucose: Metformin may also slightly reduce the absorption of glucose from the intestines.
Unlike some other antidiabetic medications, Metformin does not cause weight gain and has a lower risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when used alone.
Initial dose: The usual starting dose for adults is 850 mg once or twice daily, taken with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Maintenance dose: Depending on the patient’s blood glucose levels, the dose may be increased to 1700 mg to 2550 mg per day, divided into two or three doses.
For children (10 years and older): The starting dose is usually 500 mg once or twice daily, and it may be gradually increased to 2000 mg per day.
Note: Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dosage and frequency.
Oral use: Take the tablet with a full glass of water and with food to minimize the chance of gastrointestinal discomfort (such as nausea or diarrhea).
Do not chew or crush the tablet. Swallow it whole.
Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious side effect of Metformin.
Diuretics: Use with caution as diuretics may increase the risk of dehydration and kidney dysfunction, which can affect the clearance of Metformin.
Corticosteroids: These can affect glucose metabolism, potentially increasing blood sugar levels.
Insulin or Sulfonylureas: When used in combination with these drugs, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase. Close monitoring is required.
Always inform your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, or vitamins.
Renal Dysfunction: ORAMET 850 MG is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment or abnormal kidney function, as Metformin is excreted through the kidneys.
Lactic Acidosis: Contraindicated in patients with a history of lactic acidosis or conditions that predispose to its development, such as severe dehydration, acute heart failure, or severe infections.
Hypersensitivity: Do not use if you have a known allergy to Metformin Hydrochloride or any other component of the tablet.
Pregnancy: ORAMET is generally not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, due to the potential risks to the fetus. Consult your doctor for alternatives.
Breastfeeding: It is not known whether Metformin is excreted in breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before using this medication while breastfeeding.
Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, and abdominal discomfort.
Serious side effects: Lactic acidosis (rare but serious), severe hypoglycemia (especially when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas), and vitamin B12 deficiency (long-term use).
Less common side effects: Weight loss, metallic taste, and skin rash.
If you experience any of the following serious symptoms, seek medical attention immediately:
Signs of lactic acidosis: Unexplained muscle pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and feeling very weak or tired.
Signs of severe hypoglycemia: Excessive sweating, shakiness, confusion, blurred vision, or irregular heartbeats.
Pregnancy: ORAMET 850 MG should not be used during pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Insulin therapy is generally preferred during pregnancy for blood glucose control.
Lactation: Metformin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. The decision to use Metformin during breastfeeding should be made after considering the potential risks and benefits.
