Pharmacology:
Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes critical for bacterial DNA replication, leading to bacterial cell death.
Dosage:
Generally, 500 mg twice daily for adults. Dosage and duration depend on infection severity and clinical response.
Administration:
Take orally with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products, antacids, or mineral supplements within 2 hours of dosing as these may reduce absorption.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, sucralfate, metal supplements, warfarin, theophylline, and other CYP1A2 metabolized drugs.
Contraindications:
Allergy to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
Children and adolescents unless benefits outweigh risks
Pregnancy and breastfeeding unless clearly necessary
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness
Serious: Tendon rupture, photosensitivity reactions, QT interval prolongation

Precautions & Warnings:
