Indications:
LEROID 25 MG is indicated for:
Anxiety: It is used to relieve anxiety symptoms and agitation associated with anxiety disorders.
Insomnia: Used short-term for the treatment of sleep disturbances and insomnia.
Seizure disorders: Can be used as part of the treatment plan for controlling seizures.
Preoperative sedation: It may also be used to calm patients before surgery or medical procedures.
Pharmacology:
LEROID contains Lorazepam, a benzodiazepine that works by enhancing the effect of a neurotransmitter in the brain called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA has a calming effect on the brain, reducing nerve activity, which results in anxiety relief, sedation, muscle relaxation, and anticonvulsant effects.
Dosage:
Adults with Anxiety: Typically, 2-3 mg per day, divided into two or three doses. The dosage can be adjusted based on individual needs and response.
Adults with Insomnia: A common dose is 1-2 mg at bedtime.
Adults with Seizures: The dosage for seizure control varies, and a healthcare provider will determine the exact dose.
Administration:
Take LEROID 25 MG exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
It can be taken with or without food, depending on your doctor’s recommendation.
Try to take the medication at the same time each day to help remember.
Interaction:
Alcohol: Consuming alcohol with LEROID can increase the sedative effects and may cause excessive drowsiness, dizziness, or respiratory depression.
Other sedatives or CNS depressants: Combining with other medications that depress the central nervous system (e.g., other benzodiazepines, barbiturates, opioids) can lead to increased sedation and the risk of respiratory depression.
Antidepressants, antipsychotics, and antihistamines: These can also enhance the sedative effects of Lorazepam.
Grapefruit: Grapefruit juice can increase the levels of Lorazepam in the blood, leading to potential side effects.
Always inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to lorazepam or other benzodiazepines.
Severe respiratory depression.
Severe liver impairment or acute narrow-angle glaucoma.
Pregnancy: Lorazepam is contraindicated during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary (Category D).
Breastfeeding: Lorazepam is excreted in breast milk and should be avoided during breastfeeding unless prescribed by a doctor.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
Drowsiness, dizziness, or light-headedness.
Headache or blurred vision.
Nausea or constipation.
Fatigue or muscle weakness.
Serious side effects include:
Severe allergic reactions: Swelling, itching, difficulty breathing.
Memory problems, confusion, or mood changes.
Depression, hallucinations, or thoughts of self-harm.
Respiratory depression (difficulty breathing), especially when taken with other sedatives or alcohol.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these severe side effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Lorazepam is classified as Category D for pregnancy, meaning it has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. It should only be used if the benefit outweighs the risk, and it is not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester.
Lactation: Lorazepam passes into breast milk and should generally be avoided by breastfeeding mothers. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
