Indications:
Used for glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
Pharmacology:
Metformin reduces hepatic gluconeogenesis, enhances peripheral glucose uptake, and lowers intestinal absorption of glucose.
Dosage:
Typical dosage starts at 500 mg twice daily; Prelin 50 mg tablets may be adjusted per doctor’s recommendation. Maximum dose up to 2,000-2,500 mg/day.
Administration:
Oral intake with meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
Interaction:
May interact with insulin, sulfonylureas, diuretics, corticosteroids, and cimetidine affecting glucose control.
Contraindications:
Renal impairment, metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis, and allergy to metformin.
Side Effects:
Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and rarely lactic acidosis.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy (Category B). Excreted in breast milk; use caution while breastfeeding.
