Indications:
Dicaltrol Plus 0.25mcg is indicated for treating and preventing calcium deficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease, hypocalcemia in dialysis patients, and metabolic bone diseases like osteomalacia.
Pharmacology:
Calcitriol: The active form of vitamin D3 that enhances intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate, maintaining calcium homeostasis and promoting bone mineralization.
Calcium: An essential mineral supporting bone strength and metabolic processes.
Dosage:
Usually prescribed as 0.25 mcg daily or as directed by the physician, adjusted according to serum calcium levels.
Taken orally, dose individualized per patient.
Administration:
Oral administration with or without food. Follow physician’s instructions carefully.
Interaction:
May interact with calcium supplements, thiazide diuretics, digoxin, and magnesium-containing antacids.
Monitoring of serum calcium is important to avoid hypercalcemia.
Contraindications:
Hypercalcemia or vitamin D toxicity
Known hypersensitivity to Calcitriol, Calcium, or excipients in the formulation
Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, headache, and signs of hypercalcemia such as weakness and fatigue.
