Indications:
Betaloc (Plean) 50 mg is indicated for treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and management of acute myocardial infarction. It is also used for heart failure and certain arrhythmias.
Pharmacology:
Metoprolol tartrate, the active ingredient, selectively blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure.
Dosage:
The usual adult dose ranges from 50 to 100 mg daily in divided doses, adjusted according to patient response.
Administration:
Oral administration with or after meals for better absorption and tolerance.
Interaction:
May interact with calcium channel blockers, digoxin, insulin, and other antihypertensive agents. Close monitoring is advised.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with severe bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, and known hypersensitivity to metoprolol.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include fatigue, dizziness, bradycardia, hypotension, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed. May cause fetal bradycardia or hypoglycemia. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
Precautions & Warnings:
Careful monitoring in patients with asthma, diabetes, and peripheral vascular disease. Do not abruptly discontinue the medication.
