Escitalopram, the active ingredient in Lexaton 50 mg, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).
It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that regulates mood, anxiety, and other emotional states. By blocking the reuptake of serotonin, Lexaton helps to elevate mood and reduce feelings of anxiety.
Typical starting dose for most patients is 10 mg daily, which may be increased to 20 mg daily, based on the doctor's recommendation.
50 mg is often prescribed for patients with more severe symptoms or those who have been on treatment for an extended period.
Dosage should be adjusted by a healthcare provider depending on the patient's response and side effects.
Lexaton 50 mg is taken orally once a day, usually in the morning or evening.
It can be taken with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or break the tablet.
Lexaton can interact with certain medications such as other SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors, triptans, and stimulants, leading to a risk of serotonin syndrome.
It may also interact with blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), NSAIDs, and lithium.
Always inform your healthcare provider of all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to avoid dangerous interactions.
Contraindicated in individuals who have hypersensitivity to escitalopram or any of the components of the medication.
Not recommended for use in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or linezolid due to the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Should be used cautiously in individuals with a history of bipolar disorder, as it may trigger manic episodes.
Common side effects include nausea, insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, and sexual dysfunction.
Serious side effects may include serotonin syndrome (symptoms like agitation, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, fever), suicidal thoughts, severe allergic reactions, and severe changes in mood.
If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
Pregnancy: Lexaton should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the risks to the fetus. Consult your doctor about the risks and benefits.
Lactation: Escitalopram is excreted into breast milk, so it should be used with caution while breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before using it while nursing.
