Pharmacology:
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication and cell division, leading to bacterial death.
Dosage:
Adults typically take 500 mg twice daily. Dose and duration depend on infection severity and type.
Administration:
Oral administration with or without food. Avoid dairy products or antacids close to dosing time as they can reduce absorption.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, sucralfate, metal supplements, warfarin, and other drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
Children and adolescents (unless benefits outweigh risks)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding (use only if clearly needed)
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness
Serious: Tendon rupture, photosensitivity, QT prolongation
