Indications:
EMISTAT 50 ML is indicated for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with cytotoxic chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and post-operative conditions.
Pharmacology:
EMISTAT contains Ondansetron, a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. It works by blocking serotonin receptors both centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone and peripherally in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing emesis (vomiting).
Dosage & Administration:
Adults and children >12 years: 8 mg taken 30 minutes before chemotherapy or radiation, repeat every 8 hours as needed.
Children (6 months–12 years): Dosage based on body weight and age.
Administer orally before food. Shake well before use. Follow physician's instructions.
Interaction:
May interact with apomorphine (contraindicated), phenytoin, carbamazepine, and rifampicin. Use caution with other QT-prolonging agents or serotonergic drugs.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Ondansetron or any of its components. Not for use with apomorphine due to severe hypotension risk.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, constipation, fatigue, dizziness. Rare side effects may include QT prolongation, allergic reactions, or extrapyramidal symptoms.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Should only be used in pregnancy if clearly needed. Excretion in breast milk is unknown; caution is advised while breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use cautiously in patients with cardiac issues, electrolyte imbalances, or liver dysfunction. Monitor ECG if using with QT-prolonging drugs.
