Indications:
GLYMIN 850 MG is indicated for the:
Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin dependent)
Especially effective in overweight adults where diet and exercise alone are insufficient
Can be used as monotherapy or with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin
Pharmacology:
GLYMIN contains Metformin Hydrochloride, a biguanide oral hypoglycemic agent that:
Inhibits hepatic glucose production
Delays intestinal absorption of glucose
Improves insulin sensitivity and peripheral glucose utilization
It does not stimulate insulin secretion, hence has minimal risk of hypoglycemia.
Dosage & Administration:
Initial dose: 850 mg once daily with a main meal
May be increased gradually based on blood glucose response
Maximum recommended dose: 2550 mg/day in divided doses
Should always be taken with food to minimize GI discomfort
Interaction:
Alcohol: Increases the risk of lactic acidosis
Contrast media: Risk of renal impairment and lactic acidosis; discontinue temporarily
Cimetidine, furosemide, and nifedipine may increase metformin levels
May interact with insulin or sulfonylureas causing enhanced hypoglycemic effect
Contraindications:
Renal insufficiency (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²)
Hepatic impairment
Heart failure or conditions predisposing to hypoxia
Diabetic ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, metallic taste
Rare: Lactic acidosis (life-threatening), vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term use
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Considered safe under medical supervision during pregnancy
Can be used with caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function before and during therapy
Discontinue in case of acute illness or dehydration
Avoid in patients with severe infection, trauma, or surgery
Stop 48 hours before any contrast-enhanced imaging
