Indications:
SERGEL 20 MG Sachet is indicated for:
Rapid relief from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
Treatment of peptic ulcers associated with H. pylori infection or NSAID use.
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Erosive esophagitis.
Pharmacology:
Esomeprazole, in granular form in the sachet, is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that inhibits gastric acid secretion by blocking the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells. This leads to effective symptom relief and promotes healing of acid-induced lesions.
Dosage and Administration:
Adults: One sachet (20 mg) daily, or as prescribed by a physician.
Empty the contents of the sachet into a glass, add 1 tablespoon of water, stir until dissolved, and drink immediately.
Take at least 1 hour before meals.
Interaction:
May reduce the absorption of drugs that require an acidic environment (e.g., ketoconazole, atazanavir).
Use with caution in patients taking warfarin, as it may increase bleeding risks.
Can reduce the effectiveness of clopidogrel when used concurrently.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole, other PPIs, or any component of the formulation.
Severe liver impairment without dose adjustments.
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence.
Rare but serious: Severe allergic reactions, hypomagnesemia, and increased fracture risk with prolonged use.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Safe under medical supervision (FDA Category B).
Lactation: Use with caution; esomeprazole may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Prolonged use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency or increase the risk of bone fractures.
Monitor magnesium levels during long-term therapy.
Discontinue use and consult a physician if severe allergic reactions occur.
