Pharmacology:
GLYMIN XR contains Metformin Hydrochloride (Extended Release), a biguanide hypoglycemic agent that works by:

  • Reducing hepatic glucose production

  • Delaying intestinal glucose absorption

  • Enhancing insulin sensitivity and peripheral glucose uptake

The XR (extended-release) formulation provides gradual release over time, reducing gastrointestinal side effects and offering better compliance.

  • Dose may be increased in 500 mg increments weekly based on blood glucose monitoring

  • Maximum dose: 2000 mg/day

Interaction:

  • Alcohol may increase risk of lactic acidosis

  • Iodinated contrast agents (in radiology) may interact; discontinue temporarily

  • Drugs like cimetidine and furosemide may increase plasma metformin concentration

  • May enhance effect of other antidiabetics (risk of hypoglycemia)

Contraindications:
