Indications:
EMISTAT 8MG/4ML is indicated for the prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting caused by cytotoxic chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and postoperative procedures.
Pharmacology:
Ondansetron, the active ingredient in EMISTAT, is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. It works by blocking serotonin signals in the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract, effectively preventing nausea and vomiting.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults (Chemotherapy): 8 mg IV or IM immediately before chemotherapy, can be repeated after 8 hours if needed.
Postoperative Nausea: 4 mg IV/IM administered slowly before or after surgery.
Children (6 months and older): Dosage based on body surface area or weight.
Administer via slow IV injection over at least 30 seconds or IM as per physician’s instruction.
Interaction:
May interact with apomorphine (contraindicated), phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampicin, and medications prolonging the QT interval. Use with caution alongside serotonergic drugs (e.g., SSRIs, SNRIs).
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Ondansetron or any of its components. Not to be used concurrently with apomorphine due to severe hypotension risk.
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, injection site reactions, dizziness, constipation.
Rare: Bradycardia, QT prolongation, arrhythmia, anaphylaxis, and extrapyramidal symptoms.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use in pregnancy only when clearly necessary. Caution advised during lactation as Ondansetron may be excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor patients with cardiac arrhythmias, electrolyte disturbances, or liver dysfunction. ECG monitoring is recommended when used with other QT-prolonging drugs.
Therapeutic Class:
Antiemetic – 5-HT3 receptor antagonist
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and freezing. Keep in original packaging and out of reach of children.
