Treatment of hypothyroidism requiring low-dose thyroid hormone replacement.
Initial treatment of mild thyroid hormone deficiency.
Management of certain thyroid disorders such as goiter.
Levothyroxine is a synthetic thyroxine (T4) hormone. It restores deficient thyroid hormone levels, normalizing metabolism, energy production, and protein synthesis.
Dosage:
Initial low dose of 25 mcg daily; adjusted gradually based on TSH levels and patient tolerance.
Administration:
Take orally on an empty stomach, ideally 30 minutes before breakfast.
Reduced absorption when co-administered with iron or calcium supplements. Maintain a 4-hour gap.
Interaction with anticoagulants, antidiabetic drugs, and estrogen-containing medications.
Known hypersensitivity to Levothyroxine or its components.
Untreated thyrotoxicosis or uncorrected adrenal insufficiency.
Common: Dizziness, palpitations, nervousness, and sleep disturbances.
Rare: Overdose may lead to hyperthyroid-like symptoms, including weight loss and rapid heartbeat.
Pregnancy: Essential during pregnancy to maintain normal thyroid levels for fetal development.
Lactation: Levothyroxine passes in small amounts into breast milk but is generally safe.
Regular monitoring of thyroid function is necessary to ensure appropriate dosage.
Use cautiously in elderly patients or those with cardiovascular disease.
