Indications:
NITRIN SR 2.6 MG is indicated for:
Prevention of angina pectoris (chest pain) due to coronary artery disease
Management of chronic stable angina
Pharmacology:
Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) is a nitrate that works by relaxing vascular smooth muscles, causing vasodilation. It primarily affects veins and reduces myocardial oxygen demand by decreasing preload and afterload. It improves blood flow in coronary arteries, relieving chest pain.
Dosage & Administration:
Usual adult dose: 2.6 mg once or twice daily, depending on patient condition
Should be taken with water, preferably at the same time every day
A nitrate-free interval (usually overnight) is recommended to prevent tolerance
Interaction:
Concomitant use with phosphodiesterase inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil) may cause severe hypotension
May enhance the effect of other antihypertensive drugs
Alcohol can intensify blood pressure-lowering effects
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to nitrates
Severe anemia
Hypotension or shock
Concomitant use with sildenafil or other PDE-5 inhibitors
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, dizziness, flushing, nausea
Less common: Hypotension, tachycardia, weakness
Rare: Allergic rash, methemoglobinemia
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed
Caution during lactation as data on secretion in breast milk is limited
Precautions & Warnings:
Tolerance may develop with continuous use; follow dosing schedule with nitrate-free intervals
Use caution in patients with hypotension, glaucoma, or increased intracranial pressure
Avoid sudden position changes to minimize risk of dizziness or fainting
Therapeutic Class:
Nitrates – Anti-anginal Preparations
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
